Postpartum Depression
Combat Postpartum Depression at Rising Rose
Childbirth can be one of the most beautiful experiences that you can go through. However, it is true that the experience can be a very demanding one, both physically and mentally. Your body experiences a lot of physical changes during the process. The hormonal changes that occur within the body also bring about a lot of changes and also affects you emotionally.
What is Postpartum Depression?
Often after childbirth, the effects of the hormones continue to persist. These are called “baby blues” and usually last for a few days. They include symptoms like mood swings, anxiety, loss of appetite, crying and reduced concentration among others. These symptoms usually last for the first three days and can extend to a maximum of a couple of weeks.
Sometimes new mothers experience a prolonged form of depression, called the postpartum depression. The symptoms are similar to those of “baby blues” but they are more severe and last longer. Some of the symptoms of postpartum depression are:
· Severe mood swings or excessively depressed mood with intense crying
· Reclusive desires and withdrawal from family and friends
· Loss of appetite or sudden overeating
· Inability to sleep (insomnia) or sleeping too much, immense fatigue or devoid of energy
· Reduced interest and increased displeasure in everything
· General Irritability and anger
· Feelings of worthlessness, shame, guilt or inadequacy
· Restlessness, severe anxiety leading to panic attacks
· Recurrent suicidal thoughts
